Traditional Calabrian Handmade Rag Rugs

In the Calabria spirit of “never throw anything away,” rag rugs hold a position of prominence. These rugs are wildly colorful, mainly because they are made from strips of cloth scavenged from dresses, skirts and shirts that could no longer be repaired. Our offerings were woven on hand looms where the weft is made of strips of colorful cloth. During religious processions and dignitary visits, it was common for families to offer a greeting by hanging brightly colored or intricately woven rugs or bedding from balconies or windows.
